With less than a month until IRON FIST arrives on Netflix, Claire decided to call on Iron Fist super-fan Rebecca to discuss the recently released trailer for the show! (Cue many dog puns)
Warning: Contains lots of speculation and potential SPOILERS for the show)
Its the season finale of Luke Cage! We discuss our thoughts of the developing relationship between Luke and Claire, our final thoughts on Diamondback as a villain, and we also share our “Sweet Christmas” memories of 2016 (that mainly involve nephews)
Matt and Mel are away for the holidays so Tammy and Claire are joined by special guest Meegan to discuss the penultimate episode of Luke Cage season 1! Tammy loses her mind with joy over the long awaited Method Man cameo and Claire still holds hope that Misty’s arm will fall off before the season ends.
After a week off due to events out of our control, we are back! Guest Jason joins us to discuss everything from puns, Claire’s amputation hopes for Misty, Diamondback’s motives, and Jason tries to convince Claire to like Superman…
Mel is back(!) and the gang is joined by special guest Elizabeth to discuss episode 10 of Luke Cage. Mel makes us question whether Luke is really just a hard-boiled egg in disguise, Diamondback turns into a cartoon character, and we are all thankful that the show didn’t steer into an amnesia storyline.
Mel is still missing so the gang is joined by special guest Rhiannon from MCUExhange to dissect this episode. Tammy geeks out over the return of Harlem’s Paradise and the adorable Delfonics, Matt is encouraged to let his feelings out, and we all ponder whether Diamondback is as big and bad as he was built up to be…
Mel and Tammy are away, and Claire is ill, so it’s a good job that we have a Doctor in the house this week! Matt and Claire are joined by guest Moira to discuss the eighth episode of Luke Cage. We try to work out how Luke’s internal organs actually work, if Misty is about to get fired, and Claire is super happy to have found a Skeletor app on her phone.
We are joined by special guest Will to discuss this particularly dramatic installment of Luke Cage! We are introduced to new character “Power-Shoulders”, we try and guess the identity of the mystery sniper, and we all mourn the loss of Cottonmouth and his piano skills.
Tammy is still away working on her solo rap career so we are joined by her husband Dan and special guest Nutty to discuss episode 6.
We try to work out if it would be possible to poison Luke! We marvel at how there can be so many badass female characters in a single episode! And we wonder if its actually Mariah and not Cottonmouth that we should all be scared of…
Tammy is away this week, but guest Brad joins us to discuss episode 5 of Luke Cage, “Just to get a rep” and the theories are flying! Why should Luke Cage get a kangaroo pouch? What would happen if Luke broke a toe? Could the mysterious Diamondback actually be Cobra Commander?
Thanks as always to everybody who sent feedback in, and thanks to everyone for listening. Excelsior!
Claire chats and geeks out with Warner Joseph Miller aka “Tone” from Luke Cage to ask him how it feels to play a Marvel villain, whether he is on Team Iron Man or Team Captain America, and what they are both hoping to see in the upcoming Defenders series.
Big thanks to Warner for being such a fun guest and being very generous with his time. You can follow him on twitter @HisNameisWarner

Claire heads over to Hogarth, Chao and Benowitz to chat to their newest acquisition Marci Stahl, aka Amy Rutberg! Discussion includes analysis of Marci’s relationship with Foggy Bear, theories on the future of the Marvel Netflix shows, and just WHICH superpower would Marci like to have?
Ninjas are beaten, henchmen are gutted and boats are ‘sploded in this week’s episode of Daredevil, which maintains its quality, but with some extra padding since we are nowhere closer to finding out who the Blacksmith is or what’s in the bloodstew Nobu has been cooking. But Madame Melanie Gao is here to paint some happy little trees so that’s great! Also, Meegan joins the discussion and tells us all about meeting Charlie Cox! Excelsior!
Tammy joins the Defenders for their first Daredevil/Orange is the New Black crossover, when the Punisher and Crazy Eyes team up to take down Kingpin and Red! Meanwhile, Daredevil and that dude from the pie movie fight a bunch of ninjas! Or maybe I’m writing fanfic again….anyway this episode is great! Excelsior!
Claire talks to McCaleb Burnett aka Eliot Grote aka Grotto! A small-time crook affiliated with the Kitchen Irish, Grotto became a target of the Punisher, sought legal protection from Nelson and Murdock, and even was fake-married to Karen for a day! McCaleb was also in the Oscar-winning film “The Revenant”! Special thanks to McCaleb for coming on the podcast!
Nutty visits Defenders HQ for Matt and Elektra’s upbeat jazz party antics, complete with blind gags and tuxedos without undershirts. Then we visit the hospital where Foggy deals with unprofessionals left and right, Karen gets a promotion with PDA benefits and the Punisher grunts a bit. Excelsior!
Claire talks to EJ Scott from the podcast SCRATCH THE SURFACE with EJ SCOTT. He is the partner of Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page in DAREDEVIL). EJ talks about he and Deborah’s fundraising for research into CHM (Choroideremia), a degenerative eye disease which EJ was diagnosed with in 2003.
As part of his fundraising , this year EJ is running seven marathons in seven continents blindfolded. He has already completed marathons in both Antarctica and Tokyo this year!

Vickey joins us to talk about Matt losing his senses in the wake of getting shot in the head. Meanwhile, the DA sets up a trap for the Punisher that may have landed Matt in even worse trouble. Excelsior!
We’re back in Daredevil’s corner of Hell’s Kitchen as we start Season 2! With temperatures and Matt’s confidence at an all time high, the city is ready to explode under the threat of a new player in town! But whose side is he on? And is he now the star of the show after the events of this brutal first episode?? Jonathan joins us for a special St Patty’s day episode: “BANG”. Excelsior!
Before we all finally get to check out the first episode of Daredevil Season 2 (and before Claire gets to watch the whole thing!), we take a look back at four movies and an independent short centered around the new characters this season: The Punisher and Elektra. That’s right, we watched:
The Punisher (1989)
The Punisher (2004)
Punisher: War Zone (2008)
Punisher: Dirty Laundry (2012)
What did we think? Are they any good? Listen and find out!
Claire talks to man of action, Chris Brewster, stunt double for Charlie Cox in Daredevil, as well as stunt double for Chris Evans in Captain America: Winter Soldier! Join Claire for this action-packed interview with a guy we all Marvel at! Excelsior!
Did you watch the first part of the Daredevil Season 2 trailer yet? Since Matt, Mel and Robin are forbidden to watch, Claire enlists the help of fellow Daredevil aficionado Christine from The Other Murdock Papers to spend nearly TWO HOURS breaking down a 2.5 minute trailer!
We have reached the end of our journey with Jessica Jones until Season 2 comes out. The season one finale gave us much to “AKA Smile” about! Nearly two hours of smiles! Alirio, savior of podcasts and all-around classy guy, stops by to talk about the final battle with Kilgrave and where we leave our favorite self-loathing superhero.
Stay tuned for Part One of a two-part bonus podcast with Claire and guest Christine from The Other Murdock Papers as they discuss the Daredevil Season 2 trailer!
Doc Browne joins us for the episode previously known as “Jewel and the Power Man”, but is now “AKA Take a Bloody Number”. We get into the hard science of Kilgrave’s powers, argue flight vs jumping, get excited by a superfight and just generally praise the heck out of this awesome penultimate episode!
The aftershocks of what happened at Niku are felt by all. Jessica continues to relentlessly pursue Kilgrave while Malcolm loses faith in Jessica….because of some reason. Meanwhile we get some great backstory on #Patsicca before Jessica and Trish have a showdown with Psycho Simpson. Qu’est que see’est.
Now that Jessica realizes she can’t be controlled, stopping Kilgrave should be a cinch, right? Well, there’s always Hope. Meanwhile, things get very calamitous for Wendy, Detective Clemons wins the Ben Urich award and Robyn gets everyone to grab their torches and pitchforks because it’s time to burn the cougar! Jonathan joins us for “AKA 1,000 Cuts”.
Make sure to tell all your friends that if they are not listening to this podcast, what’s the point of having ears?
*WARNING! HERE BE SPOILERS! If you haven’t seen the entire series like Matt, Mel and Robin, listen at your own discretion!*
Edward Ricourt, writer of the Jessica Jones episode “AKA You’re A Winner!” as well as the major motion picture “Now You See Me” chats with Claire and Matt in this special interview. Mr Ricourt is also a consulting producer for the entire series, so please be aware there are spoilers!
Jessica finally has Kilgrave right where she wants him. But will it be enough to get Hope out of prison or will this turn out like Jessica’s other half-baked plans? Really, the question now is how quickly will one of Jessica’s associates betray her? As a bonus, you get to hear Robin interrupt several times with breaking news that is not-so-breaking now! Michael joins us in the “Sin Bin”.
Welcome to Kilgrave’s House of Horrors! On your left, you’ve got horrible nightmares of your creepy dead brother. On your right, a couple of chefs ready to peel each other’s faces off! And straight ahead, the worst neighbor ever! Jessica has got to scramble to escape from the clutches of Kevin, and The Defenders are here with Guest Jessica to talk all about it! (Apologies: Skype was a beast this week.)
Ruben wasn’t the only one to lose his head over this episode! Warm up a fresh batch of banana bread and join The Defenders and honorary member Vickey as we discuss this episode, brought to you by Za Cola!
It’s appropriate that this episode opens with a poker game because it’s a full house here at Defenders Tower! Heath and Angela join us to discuss the secret FINALLY coming out about Reva, and we almost got a superfight! Hope’s story is getting worse and Malcolm is trying his best to be a knight in shining peanut butter. Robyn’s body still hasn’t been found. And finally, what horrific plan does Kilgrave have in store for Jessica?
Despite the fact that Reuben didn’t actually save anyone in this episode, the Defenders regroup with this week’s guest Will to talk about another season high point with “AKA The Sandwich Saved Me”.
We talk about Jessica’s plan to grab Kilgrave, all the great girl power moments, whether we trust Will while still riding the WISH ship, choreographed fights vs straight-up brawling and Claire breaks down how comfortable that Jewel costume really is.
Sweet Christmas! The Defenders assemble to chat about “AKA It’s Called Whiskey” with guest Nutty Nuchtchas!
The mystery of why Jessica is following Luke is revealed as she tests out how unbreakable he really is. Meanwhile, Trish and Jeri try to help Hope to varying degrees of risk, while our hero Jessica finally comes face-to-face with Kilgrave! We really enjoyed this one and we hope you did too!
We are already down one Defender! No worries, our guest Rebecca, mega Iron Fist fan, steps in to help us discuss this week’s episode! So make sure you bring both of your kidneys, try not to make a mess of your closet and don’t forget to SMILE! Like a purple rabbit in a snowstorm, Kilgrave has arrived.
Will Jessica survive…..wearing those awful scrubs?
Can Hope get any creepier?
Also, riddle me this: what do Bruce Willis, Kimmy Schmidt and Luke Cage have in common?
Jessica Jones premiered on November 20th to amazing reviews! It seems like everyone has already binged through it, including Defenders team leader Claire! Now we begin our 13-week walk through every episode, just like we did with Daredevil, really savoring those nummy Marvel morsels. Claire is the expert, while Matt, Mel and Robin stay spoiler-free!
Our last bonus podcast before Jessica Jones premieres is an EPIC TEAM-UP between The Defenders Podcast and The Defenders TV Podcast! We join forces with John and Derek to take one last look at Daredevil, look ahead to Jessica Jones and sit back for a discussion of all things comics and superhero tv & movies.
Make sure to tune in to Netflix for Jessica Jones when it premieres on November 20th! And get your feedback in for the first episode “AKA Ladies Night”! Remember our rule! No spoilers for future episodes please!
This week’s bonus episode is the 2012 box office bomb “Vamps”, starring our Jessica Jones: Krysten Ritter. Well, she is relegated to best friend status in Amy Heckerling and Alicia Silverstone’s Clueless reunion. But she does get to sport fangs, wall-crawl like a spider-crab, indulge in a weird dirt fascination and hop in the coffin with Dan Stevens (Claire’s head-canon Iron Fist).
We didn’t like this one very much, so Vamps superfan Matt A gets to be an honorary Defender this week!
In the lead-up to the November 20th premiere of Jessica Jones on Netflix, the Defenders take a look at the 2011 remake of Fright Night, starring the Purple Man himself, David Tennant! Well, he’s not really the star, but he puts in a hilarious performance as the Criss-Anglicized version of Peter Vincent: Vampire Slayer. And as a bonus, we get the return of Bullseye himself: Colin Farrell! Excelsior!!
Claire assembles her Defenders as we catch up on all things Daredevil and Jessica Jones! Robin also runs through his trip to NYCC and how he nearly broke the podcast by watching the first episode of Jessica Jones already! SHAME! SHAME!
As voted by our listeners, Claire, Matt and Robin fire up their Netflix devices for a commentary over Daredevil S1E02 – Cut Man! We chat about what we would do if we found a Charlie Cox in a dumpster, cheer on the great Jack Murdock and try to spot Chris Brewster in the final fight unsuccessfully. After that, we discuss what is coming up for the November 20th premiere of Jessica Jones! So paint the walls yellow, puncture a vent in your lungs and get yourself synced up for fun and hilarity only found on The Defenders Podcast!
Matt joins Claire to chat with Peter Shinkoda, who plays Nobu, a businessman with some dark connections who has a fatal and fiery fight with our hero. We hope you enjoy this extralong chat with Peter, the last of our interviews this week! Let us know what you thought of them! Excelsior!

Claire chats with the writers of episode 9 “Speak of the Devil” – Christos and Ruth Gage! The Skype gods were not smiling on us again this week, so the audio is a bit off. Thanks for listening! Excelsior!
The Defenders are down by two but pick up two special guests: Kuljit from ManWithoutFear.com and official Fifth Defender Vickey! We chat about Matt and Foggy feels, Team Fisk, Nobu and his association with Vigo the Carpathian, season 2 Big Bad Rip Taylor, flaming Santa ninjas and the fine art of jumping up into the air and kicking someone with both of your feet! Excelsior!
The Defenders discover that they are all on the same Page. However, we do go off on a tangent when it is revealed who co-host Matt’s favorite superhero is. But evenutally, we get back to Foggy’s negging, sandwich sniffing, Melvin Potter and the Suit of Owls, cufflink trophies, and our guest Doc Browne teaches us How To Get Away With Murder! Excelsior!
The Defenders are joined by Michael to talk about the first raspy chat between Daredevil and Fisk, expendable cops, bloody Russian faces and of course, the greatness of Foggy. Well, he’s great to some of us. Excelsior!
Claire and Robin attempt to communicate with Battlin’ Jack Murdock much like Jim Caveizel and Dennis Quaid in Frequency. Needless to say there were some Skype issues. But we did have a great discussion with him about his audition process, working with Skylar Gaertner, the divisiveness of his character, and his upcoming projects. Get to work!
Claire, Matt and Mel invite Michaela and Chris to discuss British and French things, radar sense, face-touching, Senor Foggy’s popularity, Mr Brains, embryonic ducks and how useful a headless torso can be. Senor Robin is away this week because he is one bad motha. Excelsior!

Ron Howard is chipper and smiley, Ben Urich wears his best checkered shirt, Wesley scares us with his pinball skills, Fisk is very lonely, and the Punisher continues his reign of terror. Splat. Steph drops by to drink the eel with us as we discuss the passing of a great character, who may or may not be resurrected as a familiar face. We also chat about THAT FIGHT SCENE! And spurred on by feedback, we discuss fun pet names. For pets, not each other. Maybe next week. Excelsior!
The Defenders cross-examine a real man without fear, blind lawyer Josh Loevy. You may have read about Josh in the io9.com article “Why Isn’t Netflix’s New Daredevil Series Available For The Blind?“. We discuss the benefits of audio desciption for the visually impaired and how it isn’t currently available on Netflix. Josh weighs in on how accurate episode one of Netflix’s Daredevil was in regards to the blind and also clears up a lot of common misconceptions, like how true-to-life the Trial of the Incredible Hulk actually was. We hope you enjoy this bonus episode as we are planning several more in the future!
UPDATE: Since we recorded this interview, it looks like Netflix has made an announcement that they are indeed adding audio descriptions! This is great news!
On April 10, 2015, Daredevil superfan Claire stayed up all night and into the next morning bingewatching Netflix’s Daredevil like a 13-hour training montage. Meanwhile, newbie co-hosts Matt, Mel and Robin watched the first episode and ONLY the first episode as per Claire’s instructions. We are a SPOILER-FREE introcast and we discuss the trials and tribulations of delayed gratification before launching into our discussion of “Into The Ring”. How does this street-level vigilante fit into this world of dancing Groot plants? What are those opening credits trying to say? Which characters really stood out for us? What’s with the crouchfighting and the woob-woob-woob pitter-patter? And in the criminal underworld, where can we sign up for sandwich duty? Excelsior!
Join the Defenders as they talk about Frank Miller’s Daredevil: The Man Without Fear! In 1980, Frank Miller got to draw Roger McKenzie’s interpretation of the Daredevil origin and eventually he took over as lead writer for an epic run on the series. In 1993, Frank returned to give his own take on the “unfortunate” beginnings of Matt Murdock, a young man without fear. And this week, the classic miniseries is examined and cross-examined by The Defenders and special guest Killian! We hope you enjoy the show. We also recommend Dave’s Daredevil Podcast episodes 10-14 for more on this miniseries! And make sure to come back next week as we begin our weekly look at the Daredevil series on Netflix! It’s almost here!!! Excelsior!
Join the Defenders as they talk 2003’s Daredevil the Director’s Cut! In 2003, after the success of X-Men and Spider-Man, Daredevil finally got his shot at the cinemas. It was a big success financially but critical reception was mixed to poor. A year later, we got a Director’s Cut which added nearly 30 minutes and Coolio. Did more of this movie make it palatable or did writer/director Mark Steven Johnson bite off more than he could chew? And how much comedy can be mined from a character whose last name sounds like a delicious snack? The Defenders call Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner to the stand! Join us next week for a look at Frank Miller/John Romita Jr’s “Daredevil: The Man Without Fear”! And then the following week, Daredevil premieres on Netflix! Excelsior!
Join us as we talk about Daredevil and the Kingpin’s first live-action appearance with guest Vickey Tree from Geek Syndicate in her first live-action podcast appearance! Is this 1989 TV movie so terrible that it’s found guilty or is nostalgia and campiness enough to get an acquittal from The Defenders? Excelsior!
